Greenville, South Carolina – Drivers across the western Carolinas and nearby northeast Georgia are facing dangerous travel conditions Monday morning as dense fog blankets the region, sharply reducing visibility on many roads during the early commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect through mid-morning for portions of Upstate and central South Carolina, western North Carolina, and northeastern Georgia. Visibility has dropped below a quarter mile in some locations, particularly across the foothills and Piedmont, making driving conditions hazardous on both highways and secondary roads.

The thickest fog is impacting areas around Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, and Gaffney, along with parts of western North Carolina including Asheville and Hickory. Northeast Georgia communities such as Toccoa and surrounding rural areas are also seeing pockets of very low visibility. Major routes including I-85, I-26, I-385, and U.S. 29 may experience sudden visibility changes.

Emergency officials urge drivers to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and increase following distance. Fog-related accidents are more likely during peak morning travel hours, especially at intersections, bridges, and low-lying areas.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve after sunrise as temperatures rise and mixing increases. Forecasters say fog could linger longer in sheltered valleys, and additional advisories remain possible if low visibility persists later into the morning. Residents should continue monitoring local updates before heading out.
