RALEIGH, NC – Families across the Carolinas and Virginia may see Father’s Day plans disrupted by severe weather, with a significant threat of flash flooding developing this afternoon and continuing through the evening. Saturated ground from previous rainfall has created conditions ripe for rapid runoff as a new line of storms moves into the Mid-Atlantic.

According to the National Weather Service, a Flood Watch is in effect until 11 p.m. for central North Carolina, including the Triad, Triangle, Rocky Mount, and Goldsboro areas. The NWS Weather Prediction Center has also issued a Moderate Risk of excessive rainfall for northeastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia, where scattered to numerous instances of flash flooding are likely.

The primary severe storm threat, including damaging wind gusts over 55 mph and quarter-sized hail, is expected between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. across the Virginia Piedmont and parts of West Virginia. With 1 to 3 inches of rain possible in the hardest-hit locations, any intense downpour could quickly make travel dangerous.

Officials advise residents to stay aware of changing conditions and to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts. Motorists should never attempt to drive through flooded roadways. The main threat will continue until storms dissipate late this evening.
