Greenville, South Carolina – Residents across the Carolinas are baking under extreme heat Friday as heat index values surge past 100°F, with some areas peaking as high as 105°F by late afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, high humidity and temperatures roughly five degrees above normal are creating sweltering conditions outside the mountains. A heat advisory remains in effect for much of the Piedmont and Upstate regions through at least 8 p.m.

Charlotte, Concord, Rock Hill, and Greenwood are among the hardest hit, with apparent temperatures topping 104°F. In Spartanburg and Gaffney, indexes are holding between 102°F and 103°F. Only mountain areas like Asheville are spared, staying below the critical 100°F threshold.

Drivers, outdoor workers, and vulnerable residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit time outside, and check on elderly neighbors. Avoid strenuous activity during peak heating hours (1 to 6 p.m.) and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.

Though isolated thunderstorms could offer brief relief, the oppressive heat is expected to return Saturday. Heat advisories may extend into the weekend.
