Lumberton, North Carolina – Dangerous winter weather is expected to move into southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina Saturday night, bringing sleet and ice that could disrupt travel and cause power outages through late Sunday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, an Ice Storm Warning is in effect from 7 p.m. Saturday until 1 a.m. Monday for Robeson County in North Carolina and Marlboro County in South Carolina. Sleet accumulations could reach up to one-half inch, with ice accumulations around one-quarter of an inch, enough to create hazardous conditions on roads and stress trees and power lines.

Regional impacts will focus on travel and utilities. Roads are expected to become slick quickly, especially bridges, overpasses, and rural routes across Robeson and Marlboro counties. Even modest ice buildup could lead to downed tree limbs and scattered power outages, particularly in areas with prolonged freezing conditions.

In communities including Lumberton, Bennettsville, McColl, and surrounding rural areas, residents are urged to limit travel once icing begins. Those who must be on the roads should allow extra time, reduce speed, and carry emergency supplies including food, water, and a flashlight. Residents are also encouraged to charge electronic devices and prepare for possible power interruptions.

The Ice Storm Warning remains in effect through early Monday morning, and conditions may remain hazardous into the start of the new week. Residents should continue monitoring local alerts and check road conditions by calling 511 before traveling as conditions deteriorate across the region.
