Greenville, SC – A high fire danger advisory is in effect across the Carolinas and North Georgia today as dry air and low humidity increase the risk of wildfires.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Greenville-Spartanburg and Peachtree City, the alert remains active until 8 p.m. Friday, March 21. Relative humidity levels are expected to fall between 10–20% across most of the region, particularly in lower elevations. While winds will be lighter than Thursday, gusts near 20 mph may still occur along ridgetops.
The affected area spans a large portion of upstate South Carolina—including Greenville, Spartanburg, and Anderson counties—as well as western North Carolina counties like Buncombe, Jackson, and Mecklenburg. In Georgia, much of the north and central portions, including Atlanta and Athens, are impacted.
State agencies are urging residents to avoid outdoor burning today. Local burn permits may be restricted or suspended depending on county regulations. Authorities advise using extreme caution if burning is absolutely necessary, as fires can spread quickly in dry conditions.
Fire officials recommend clearing brush from around structures, avoiding equipment that produces sparks, and staying informed through local emergency management channels. The elevated fire danger is expected to ease as moisture levels recover late Friday into Saturday.
