Wilmington, North Carolina – Near-record heat is building across coastal and inland North Carolina today, but a strong cold front will bring gusty showers and a quick cooldown late tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, temperatures are climbing into the mid to upper 80s Friday, with cities like Wilmington, Lumberton, and Whiteville nearing or tying record highs. Inland areas could peak around 88 to 89 degrees, while coastal spots stay slightly cooler in the upper 70s to low 80s.
The pattern shifts quickly after sunset. A strong cold front will move through late tonight, bringing a round of showers and gusty winds. While severe weather is not guaranteed, brief heavy rain and wind gusts could impact travel, especially along US-17, US-74, and I-40 overnight.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items and remain alert for changing conditions if traveling late tonight.
By Saturday morning, cooler and drier air settles in, ending the heat spike and bringing more seasonable conditions for the weekend.
Additional updates may be issued if storms strengthen as the front approaches overnight.
