Carol Stream, Ill. — According to a news release from the Village of Carol Stream, Clarke Mosquito Control has confirmed that the West Nile Virus has been detected in a mosquito sample. The sample was collected from the area of St. Charles Road and Westgate Drive in Carol Stream.

Clarke Mosquito Control indicates that this result means traces of West Nile Virus are in the mosquito population in this area. No human cases have been reported at this time.

The Village of Carol Stream said they are beginning proactive measures to lower the risk of transmission. Beginning the evening of July 14, the Village started a localized mosquito application for adult mosquito control. Additionally, the Village will start increased surveillance and monitoring of the mosquito population in this area.

The Village recommended that residents begin their own safety measures to protect themselves from West Nile Virus. The Village suggests draining standing water from around residents’ homes. Residents should also regularly scrub and refill pet water dishes and bird baths. Use insect repellent whenever outdoors and reapply often, following repellent directions. Residents should try to wear long sleeves, long pants and closed toed shoes when outdoors. Dusk to dawn is the prime time for mosquitos, so residents should be careful to apply repellent during this time.

Updates on the mosquito monitoring and any questions residents have can be addressed with Clarke Mosquito Control.
