Caribou, ME – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect across northern Maine through 1 p.m. Monday as light but persistent snow and gusty winds continue to create hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected this morning across Northwest and Northeast Aroostook, Northern and Central Piscataquis, Northern Somerset and Northern Penobscot counties. Communities including Caribou, Fort Kent, Greenville, Houlton, Millinocket and Madawaska will experience steady snowfall and wind gusts reaching 35 to 40 mph.

Forecasters warn that roads may become snow-covered and slick, especially during the Monday morning commute. Stronger gusts could reduce visibility at times, particularly along open stretches and higher terrain near Baxter State Park, Ashland, Patten and Monson.

Even though accumulations are modest, the combination of cold temperatures, steady snow and gusty winds will make travel challenging. Drivers should prepare for slower speeds, icy patches and limited visibility. The NWS notes that conditions may vary widely between towns, with heavier bursts in some locations and lighter snow just a few miles away.

Residents traveling this morning are urged to use caution, leave extra time and allow for greater stopping distances. Bridges, hills and less-treated rural roads will be especially slick.

Snow showers are expected to diminish early this afternoon as winds begin to ease across the region.
