Caribou, ME – Snow returns to northern Maine this afternoon, marking the start of an active and wintry stretch of weather, according to the National Weather Service in Caribou.
Forecasters say precipitation will begin around midday Sunday and continue through midnight, producing 1 to 4 inches of wet snow across northern areas such as Fort Kent, Van Buren, and Clayton Lake. Coastal and Downeast areas, including Bar Harbor and Machias, may see a brief mix or transition to rain by evening.
Southerly winds gusting up to 40 mph are expected along the coastal Downeast region, which could lead to isolated power outages. Meanwhile, snow squalls are possible in Aroostook County Monday morning as colder air returns behind the system.
Looking ahead, the NWS warns of a potentially larger storm system Tuesday into Tuesday night, which could bring heavier snow south of Houlton. Meteorologists caution there remains high uncertainty in the midweek forecast and urge residents to check back for updates.
