CARIBOU, Maine – A wintry mix of snow and freezing rain is coating northern and central Maine tonight, creating slick roads and icy travel conditions that will linger into the Monday morning commute. The National Weather Service in Caribou reports that up to 2 inches of snow and one-tenth of an inch of ice are expected by sunrise.

The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. EST Monday for Aroostook, Somerset, Piscataquis, and Penobscot Counties. Forecasters say the North Woods and high terrain areas, including Clayton Lake, Baxter State Park, and Greenville, will see the greatest snow and ice accumulation.

Temperatures hovering near freezing will allow freezing rain and sleet to glaze roads, bridges, and sidewalks overnight. Even a thin layer of ice can make travel treacherous along Route 11, U.S. 1, and I-95 between Houlton and Millinocket. Drivers are urged to reduce speed and avoid sudden braking during the morning hours.

Conditions will gradually improve by mid-morning as temperatures rise above freezing and precipitation transitions to light rain or drizzle.
