Caribou, Maine – Showers and storms are hammering northern Maine this afternoon, with cloud-to-ground lightning and heavy rainfall affecting the Allagash, North Woods, and Moosehead regions—just west and north of the I-95 corridor.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, these slow-moving storms will continue into the early evening before weakening after sunset. The greatest impacts are expected across the Central Highlands, Baxter Region, and nearby gravel and dirt roads, where downpours may lead to slick travel conditions and minor flooding.
Cities including Fort Kent, Clayton Lake, and St. Pamphile are under the highest threat through 7 p.m. Wednesday. Dangerous lightning remains a top concern, with meteorologists warning: “When thunder roars, head indoors.”
Travelers are advised to avoid non-essential driving in affected areas, especially on rural roads where runoff may create hazardous conditions. Power outages may also occur in isolated spots due to lightning strikes.
Storm activity is expected to taper off overnight. However, additional showers are possible Thursday morning, and residents should monitor updated advisories from NWS Caribou.
