CARIBOU, Maine – Northern Maine will see its first coating of snow Friday night as a quick-moving system spreads light precipitation across the region. The National Weather Service in Caribou reports that snow will begin around 6 p.m. in the western mountains, reaching the St. John Valley by about 9 p.m. before mixing with or changing to rain overnight.
According to the NWS, most areas north of Houlton can expect up to an inch of accumulation, with isolated spots near Mount Katahdin and the high terrain picking up closer to two inches. Roads may become slick between 9 p.m. and midnight, especially on untreated surfaces and higher elevations. Farther south, including Bangor and the Downeast coast, precipitation will fall as rain.
Temperatures will range from the upper 20s in the far north to near 40 along the coast overnight. Conditions will moderate Saturday, bringing partial clearing and a milder afternoon with highs reaching the 50s north and near 60 Downeast.
Forecasters warn that a larger storm system is expected to approach late Sunday night into Monday, bringing widespread rain that could begin as a wintry mix or snow in northern Maine before transitioning to rain. Drivers should remain alert to changing conditions through early Monday morning.
