CARIBOU, Maine – The sun rises over frost-glazed fields in Aroostook County, the air so crisp it bites at bare skin. Tuesday starts calm and clear, but northern Maine is staring down a fast-changing stretch that could hint at the region’s first brush with early-season snow.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, Tuesday and Wednesday stay bright and dry, with highs in the low 50s and light winds under blue skies. The break ends Thursday afternoon as a system moves in from the Great Lakes, spreading clouds and rain across northern Maine by late day. Showers will intensify Thursday night into Friday, with gusts up to 25 mph and temperatures staying in the upper 40s to mid-50s.
Residents should expect slick rural roads Thursday evening and patchy fog through Friday morning along Route 1 and I-95 near Presque Isle. By Friday night, colder air rushes in behind the departing system, setting up a breezy Saturday with lingering showers — and perhaps a brief mix of rain and snow across the higher elevations west of Caribou.
To be fair, any flakes would be fleeting, but it’s another reminder that November’s chill is arriving early this year. Sunday looks drier but cool, with highs only near the mid-40s and wind gusts keeping the air brisk.
After all, it’s late October in northern Maine — and the next round of showers could just as easily bring snow.
