Maine – Snow presses steadily across the far north this New Year’s morning, coating trees and burying road edges as visibility drops along open stretches. Wind lifts loose powder into the air, and the cold bites hard enough to sting exposed skin within minutes.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through tonight for northern Penobscot, southeast Aroostook, and northeast Aroostook counties. Snow totals between 3 and 6 inches are expected, with the highest amounts near the Route 1 corridor. Gusty winds increase later today, producing areas of blowing snow and rapidly changing visibility.
Travel across Aroostook County will be difficult at times. Snow-covered roads, drifting snow, and brief whiteouts may develop, especially in open rural areas. Drivers on Route 1, Route 11, and secondary roads should expect slippery conditions through the day and into evening. Plan extra time, slow down, and keep headlights on.
Temperatures remain brutal. Highs struggle to reach the lower 20s today, then plunge well below zero tonight. Wind chills dip toward 20 below, increasing the risk of frostbite. To be fair, snow intensity eases later tonight, but the cold tightens its grip heading into Friday.
Friday brings patchy blowing snow and limited sunshine, followed by a frigid weekend. Highs stay near or below 5 degrees Saturday and Sunday, with nighttime lows dropping well below zero. Any untreated surfaces will stay icy, and mechanical issues become more likely in extreme cold.
Winter is firmly in control as 2026 begins. Secure travel plans, dress in layers, and check road conditions before heading out.
