Caribou, Maine – A hard freeze is expected across much of northern and central Maine overnight, with temperatures plunging into the 20s by early Sunday morning. The National Weather Service has issued Freeze Warnings for counties including Aroostook, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Somerset, and northern Washington, in effect from midnight through 8 a.m. Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, overnight lows will range from the middle 20s in northern Aroostook to near 30 degrees in central and southern Piscataquis. The early-season cold snap could kill late-summer crops, damage sensitive plants, and harm unprotected outdoor plumbing.

Residents in Caribou, Houlton, Presque Isle, and Millinocket should cover or bring in garden plants before nightfall. Those with camps or rural cabins are advised to insulate outdoor pipes or drain them ahead of the freeze to avoid bursting. Farmers across the St. John Valley and potato country in Aroostook County face the highest agricultural impacts.

Temperatures are expected to rebound into the 50s by Sunday afternoon, but another round of chilly nights may follow early next week. Additional advisories could be issued if the cold trend continues.
