Caribou, ME – A winter storm is expected to impact northern Maine beginning around midnight tonight, bringing heavy snow, mixed precipitation, and hazardous travel conditions through Sunday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, the storm will move in from the southwest late Saturday night, spreading northward through early Sunday morning. Most of northern Maine is expected to see all snow, while areas farther south, including Bangor and Downeast Maine, may experience a wintry mix after sunrise Sunday.

Forecasters say total snowfall of 5 to 9 inches is expected across Aroostook County and far northern Maine, while Downeast areas could see 1 to 5 inches of snow, along with sleet and a light glaze of ice. The heavier, wetter snow in southern areas could make cleanup more difficult and increase the risk of slick conditions.

After an initial round of snow Sunday morning, precipitation may pause Sunday afternoon as drier air briefly moves in. However, the break will be short-lived. A second round of snow is expected Sunday evening into Sunday night, adding to totals across the region.

Winds are forecast to increase Sunday night into Monday, and when combined with lighter, fluffier snow, could lead to blowing and drifting snow, particularly in open and rural areas. Travel conditions may deteriorate again Monday, especially across northern sections.

Motorists are urged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and be prepared for rapidly changing road conditions, especially during the overnight and Sunday morning hours.

Residents should continue monitoring forecasts and advisories as the storm evolves.
