Caribou, ME – The National Weather Service in Caribou reports that a winter storm is moving across Maine today, bringing heavy snowfall to the north and mostly rain farther south. The heaviest accumulation is expected across Aroostook County and surrounding northern areas, with up to 10 inches possible by Thursday afternoon.

After this first round of snow tapers off Thursday afternoon, a brief lull will occur before another wave of light, fluffy snow develops late Thursday night. Forecasters warn that as winds increase overnight, this new snowpack will blow around easily, leading to dangerously reduced visibility and drifting snow through Friday morning.

“Gusty winds through Friday will continue to cause dangerous travel conditions,” NWS Caribou said. Wind gusts could reach 35 mph, particularly in open areas.

Drivers in Caribou, Presque Isle, Fort Kent, and Houlton are urged to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy snow and blowing snow. Roads may become snow-covered and slick, especially along U.S. Route 1 and other rural highways.

Timing of impacts:

  • Snow: This afternoon through Thursday afternoon
  • Blowing snow: Thursday night through Friday afternoon

Action: Expect slippery roads, blowing snow, and reduced visibilities. The National Weather Service advises using extreme caution if travel cannot be postponed.

Residents in southern and coastal Maine will see mainly rain, with minimal snow accumulation expected.
