Caribou, Maine – Snow and fog are expected to impact parts of Maine beginning tonight, with icy travel conditions possible later this week as temperatures fluctuate.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, snow will move into northern Maine tonight, while rain in southern areas may lead to patchy to locally dense fog developing overnight. Forecasters say fog could become thick enough to reduce visibility during the Wednesday morning commute, particularly in southern portions of the state.
The Weather Service noted that slick spots may develop this evening and overnight, increasing the risk of hazardous travel in areas where temperatures hover near freezing. Drivers are urged to use caution, slow down, and allow extra distance between vehicles.
A second weather system is expected to arrive Wednesday night into Thursday, bringing warmer air and a mix of rain and wintry precipitation. The most significant concern with this system is a potential flash freeze Thursday night, when temperatures are expected to drop rapidly after rainfall.
Forecasters warn that wet roads could freeze quickly, leading to very icy conditions with little warning. This type of rapid icing can be especially dangerous for nighttime and early-morning travel.
The National Weather Service emphasized that these hazards can be “sneaky,” developing quickly without heavy snowfall. Residents are encouraged to monitor forecasts closely and prepare for changing road conditions through the middle of the week.
No specific snowfall totals or advisories were included in this update, but officials said additional statements may be issued if conditions worsen.
