Caribou, Maine – Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms are expected across northern and eastern Maine Sunday, offering only modest relief to the region’s worsening drought conditions. While some areas may pick up as much as a half-inch of rain, most locations will see less.

According to the National Weather Service office in Caribou, rainfall totals will range between 0.1 and 0.5 inches across much of the state. The heaviest showers are forecast in Bangor, Ellsworth, and Bar Harbor, where isolated pockets could see up to 0.8 inches. Lighter amounts are expected farther north, including Presque Isle, Houlton, and Fort Kent.

Officials say the rain will help reduce wildfire risk temporarily, but it is not enough to reverse long-term dryness. The U.S. Drought Monitor reports that eastern and northern Maine are experiencing severe drought, with stressed crops, dropping well levels, and dry lawns being reported. Residents are encouraged to share on-the-ground conditions, including photos of wilted plants or low water sources, to help forecasters track impacts.

Drivers should be alert for slick roads during heavier downpours, though flooding is not expected. Spotty showers may continue into the evening before tapering overnight. Additional advisories are possible if conditions change.
