Caribou, Maine – Hurricane Erin will remain far offshore this week, but its effects are expected to churn up dangerous surf and powerful rip currents along the Maine coast—especially by Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a High Surf Advisory goes into effect Thursday evening for Coastal Downeast Maine, with Small Craft Advisories beginning late Wednesday night. The primary hazard includes strong rip currents along sandy beaches and sneaker waves crashing against rocky coastlines.

Waves could build sharply on Friday as offshore winds increase, posing serious risks to beachgoers and boaters. The NWS warns that conditions may appear calm but can change rapidly—waves slamming into rock outcrops could sweep people off their feet. Visitors should keep a safe distance from the water and never turn their back on the ocean.

Communities from Bar Harbor to Eastport should exercise extreme caution through at least Friday night. Boaters are urged to check marine forecasts and avoid unnecessary travel.

More advisories could follow as Erin’s track develops. For now, hazards remain likely through late Friday, with lingering effects into the weekend.
