Caribou, ME – Drought conditions have worsened across Maine, with more than 70% of the state now in severe to extreme drought, according to the National Weather Service in Caribou.

The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows 33.6% of Maine classified in Extreme Drought (D3) — up from 29.6% last week — and another 39.8% in Severe Drought (D2). River and lake levels have dropped to record or near-record lows, with reports of exposed rocks and reduced flow across many waterways, including the St. John and Piscataquis Rivers.

Forecasters say next week’s weather pattern will bring some rain, but not enough to reverse months of dry conditions. The 7-day rainfall outlook shows up to 1 inch possible, far below the 10–15 inches needed to alleviate long-term deficits.

Officials are asking residents to report dry wells and low water levels through the Maine Emergency Management Agency’s Dry Well Survey, which helps track private and public water shortages statewide.

Residents are encouraged to conserve water and remain alert for updates as fall continues with limited precipitation.
