Caribou, ME – The National Weather Service in Caribou is warning residents of northern and central Maine to prepare for dangerous cold and possible snow squalls through Thursday.

A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect tonight for the North Woods and Central Highlands, where temperatures will plunge to around 0°F. Combined with wind gusts up to 30 mph, wind chills could fall to 25–30 degrees below zero. The NWS advises residents to wear layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors to avoid frostbite and hypothermia.

Forecasters also warn that snow squalls may develop on Thursday, producing brief whiteout conditions and rapidly deteriorating road visibility. Drivers are urged to stay alert for Snow Squall Warnings, which indicate imminent travel danger.

According to the NWS, motorists should slow down, avoid sudden braking, and pull over safely if caught in a squall. Even short bursts of heavy snow can make roads slick within minutes.
