Caribou, ME – Snow is returning to northern and eastern Maine today, bringing slippery roads and reduced visibility through this evening, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Caribou. Forecasters report 1 to 2 inches of snow early Wednesday across Downeast Maine, followed by heavier snowfall of 5 to 8 inches across northern portions of the state later in the day.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the northern counties, including areas near Houlton, Clayton Lake, and Oxbow, where travel conditions may deteriorate this afternoon. Snow will mix with rain farther south, including regions near Bangor and Ellsworth, as temperatures climb into the 30s and low 40s.

According to the NWS, snow will persist in the north through the afternoon and into the evening, with the heaviest accumulations expected in areas north of Mt. Katahdin and Greenville. Winds will increase late Wednesday and remain gusty into Thursday and Friday, potentially blowing snow and further reducing visibility.

Motorists are urged to slow down, keep headlights on, and maintain a safe following distance on snow-covered roads. The NWS also advises ensuring vehicles are winterized and equipped with emergency supplies as colder air settles in overnight.

A Gale Warning has been issued for coastal waters, with seas expected to reach up to 10 feet offshore tonight.
