Maine – Bright sunlight reflects off frozen ground across Aroostook County this morning, but a messy early-week storm is lining up that could turn roads slick before midday Monday.

Temperatures hover near 18°F early this morning in Caribou, with light northwest winds and mostly cloudy skies. Conditions remain quiet through the day as sunshine pushes highs toward 31°F, keeping roads generally dry across northern Maine.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Winter Weather Advisory takes effect at 4 a.m. Monday and continues until noon across far northern and eastern Maine.

Snow begins developing before sunrise Monday and may quickly mix with freezing rain and sleet as warmer air pushes north into the region.

Forecasters expect around 1 inch of snow with a light glaze of ice, enough to create slippery road conditions during the Monday morning commute.

Drivers along U.S. Route 1, Route 161, and Route 89 near Caribou, Presque Isle, and Fort Kent should prepare for slick pavement and limited visibility during heavier bursts of precipitation.

Residents should allow extra travel time Monday morning and keep sidewalks treated as ice could briefly accumulate on untreated surfaces.

Temperatures surge Monday afternoon, climbing toward 51°F, which will change the wintry mix to rain and help melt early accumulations.

Rain continues Monday night with breezy conditions before another weather shift arrives Tuesday.

Rain may mix with snow showers again Tuesday afternoon, especially as colder air moves back across northern Maine.

Colder air settles into the region by midweek with highs falling into the low 20s Wednesday, returning the North Woods to a more typical late-winter feel.
