Maine – Snow taps steadily against windows this morning as wind sweeps across open fields, lifting powder into drifting sheets. Visibility fades fast in spots. Winter has firm control of Far Northern Maine today, and travel conditions may deteriorate quickly.
The National Weather Service in Caribou has issued a Winter Weather Advisory until 4 p.m. today for Northeast and Northwest Aroostook Counties. Snowfall totals range from 3 to 5 inches, with isolated higher amounts possible. Northwest winds strengthen through the morning, gusting near 30 mph. Those winds will create patchy blowing snow and sudden whiteouts, especially on rural roads and exposed stretches.
Temperatures hover in the teens this morning and struggle to climb. Wind chills remain below zero at times, adding to the bite. Snow continues through midday, tapering late afternoon. Even as snowfall lightens, drifting snow may continue to reduce visibility.
Drivers should expect slippery roads and rapidly changing conditions. Plan extra time and reduce speed, especially on Route 1, Route 11, and secondary roads. Conditions may improve slowly late today, but hazards linger after sunset as temperatures drop.
Friday night turns sharply colder. Lows fall near 1 degree, with wind chills near -7. Saturday brings a brief break with partial sun and highs near 22, though snow showers return late. Saturday night may bring additional light accumulation.
Sunday stays mostly cloudy with highs near 29 and scattered snow chances. The cold deepens again Sunday night. By MLK Day, highs reach only the mid-20s, with lingering snow showers possible during the afternoon.
Another Arctic push arrives early next week. Overnight lows drop below zero, and daytime highs remain in the teens. Flash freezing becomes a concern after any melting.
If you’re traveling today, take it slow and stay alert. How are road conditions where you are right now?
