MIAMI, Fl. – Heavy rainfall and dangerous winds are expected to batter parts of Hispaniola and Jamaica through the weekend as Tropical Storm Melissa creeps slowly across the central Caribbean Sea. The system, currently sustaining winds near 50 mph, could strengthen into a hurricane by Friday, threatening to bring flash flooding and landslides across Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
According to the National Hurricane Center, a Hurricane Watch is in effect for Haiti’s southwestern peninsula, while a Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Jamaica. Melissa’s slow movement means prolonged rainfall, with totals of 6 to 12 inches possible in higher elevations, increasing the likelihood of mudslides and road closures.
Residents are urged to complete preparations by Thursday, including securing loose outdoor items and avoiding travel in flood-prone areas. Power outages and transportation disruptions are likely as conditions deteriorate.
Forecasters caution that there remains uncertainty in Melissa’s exact path and strength, but the system is expected to continue impacting the region through Sunday. Additional advisories are expected as the storm evolves.
