Kingston, Jamaica – The National Weather Service warns that Tropical Storm Melissa could bring life-threatening flooding, landslides, and strong winds to parts of the Caribbean beginning late Saturday and lasting into early next week.
According to the 5 p.m. EDT advisory, Melissa’s slow forward motion will lead to prolonged heavy rainfall across Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic, with totals high enough to trigger catastrophic flash flooding and numerous landslides. Forecasters also warn of an increasing risk of dangerous storm surge near Jamaica as the system approaches early next week.
Haiti is expected to face some of the worst impacts, with strong winds and extensive flood damage possible across the Tiburon Peninsula. Heavy rain is also forecast for eastern Cuba and the Bahamas, where localized flooding and landslides could develop by midweek.
Residents across the region are urged to complete storm preparations immediately, stay alert for local warnings, and monitor updates from official weather agencies.
