Carbondale, Illinois – Fires could ignite and spread within minutes across southern Illinois and southeast Missouri this afternoon as dry air and gusty winds peak before sunset.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. Sunday, with south winds sustained at 13 to 18 mph and gusts reaching 27 mph. Relative humidity is expected to drop as low as 20 percent, while drought-stricken vegetation has left fuel moisture between 6 and 8 percent.

The highest risk spans Jefferson, Williamson, Jackson, and Union counties in Illinois, along with Cape Girardeau, Bollinger, and Butler counties in Missouri. Open fields, wooded areas, and roadside ditches are especially vulnerable. Fire officials warn that even a small spark—from a cigarette or equipment—could trigger fast-moving flames capable of jumping roadways like Interstate 57 and U.S. Route 60.

Residents are urged to avoid any outdoor burning and secure trailer chains to prevent roadside sparks. Farmers and contractors should delay fieldwork involving machinery that could generate heat or friction.

Conditions are expected to ease after sunset as humidity slowly recovers, but officials warn that additional fire alerts could be issued if dry patterns persist into early week.
