St. Louis, Missouri – Variable temperatures this week will include a brief chance for light wintry precipitation Tuesday across parts of southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois, with limited impacts expected.
According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, confidence is increasing that the week will end with warmer temperatures, but Tuesday remains the only period with a precipitation chance. A 20 to 30 percent chance of rain or a wintry mix is forecast for portions of southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois.
Forecasters note that if snow develops, accumulations are expected to be light, generally a dusting up to around 0.2 inches. In addition, a light glaze of ice is possible in isolated areas, particularly during the morning hours when temperatures are colder. Any icing is expected to be minimal but could still create localized slick conditions.
Major travel corridors including Interstate 55, Interstate 64, Interstate 44, US-67, and I-57 may see isolated slick spots, especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads. The National Weather Service emphasizes that even minor winter precipitation can affect travel during peak commute times.
Outside of Tuesday, the remainder of the week is expected to remain dry. Temperatures will fluctuate, with cooler conditions midweek followed by a noticeable warmup by Thursday and Friday. Highs late in the week are expected to reach the 40s to near 50 degrees, especially across central and southern Missouri.
Overnight lows will continue to dip below freezing at times, which could allow any leftover moisture to refreeze early in the week. Conditions are expected to improve as warmer air settles in toward the weekend.
Early-morning commuters, students, and long-distance drivers should pay close attention to road conditions Tuesday, particularly in southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois.
Residents are encouraged to monitor forecast updates as details on precipitation type and timing become clearer.
