Paducah, Kentucky – Dangerous cold conditions are expected to intensify late tonight across western Kentucky, southern Illinois, southeast Missouri, and southwest Indiana, prompting a Cold Weather Advisory as wind chills fall to hazardous levels.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, the advisory remains in effect from midnight CST tonight through noon Saturday. Wind chill values are forecast to drop as low as 10 to 15 degrees below zero, creating a serious risk for frostbite and hypothermia with prolonged exposure.
Very cold temperatures will persist through the weekend, with the most dangerous conditions occurring overnight and during the early morning hours. Forecasters warn that even short periods outdoors without proper protection could become dangerous, particularly for vulnerable populations.
Travelers along Interstate 24, Interstate 55, Interstate 69, and U.S. Highways 45 and 60 should be prepared for extreme cold exposure in the event of vehicle issues or delays. While widespread winter precipitation is not expected, cold air alone poses a significant hazard to motorists and outdoor workers.
The National Weather Service urges residents to dress in layers, cover all exposed skin, and limit time outdoors. Pets should be brought indoors, and residents are encouraged to check on elderly neighbors, family members, and those without reliable heat.
Officials also stress the importance of using alternative heating sources safely. Space heaters should be kept at least three feet away from flammable materials, kerosene heaters should only be used as directed, and grills or cooktops should never be used indoors. Fireplaces and wood stoves should be properly ventilated and extinguished before sleeping.
Homeowners are advised to protect plumbing by insulating exposed pipes and allowing faucets to drip during the coldest hours.
Cold temperatures are expected to gradually moderate early next week, but winter hazards remain in place through Saturday morning. Residents across the region should continue monitoring forecast updates and take precautions to stay safe during this period of extreme cold.
