Cañon City, Colorado – A cold, clear night will bring patchy frost to the Arkansas River Valley early Tuesday, signaling the end of the growing season for parts of eastern Fremont County. The National Weather Service in Pueblo has kept a Frost Advisory in effect from 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. MDT Tuesday, covering Cañon City and Penrose.
Forecasters expect temperatures to drop to around 30°F by dawn under mostly clear skies and light winds. The cold air pooling along the lower valley floors will lead to widespread frost formation on lawns, vehicles, and exposed vegetation.
According to the National Weather Service, the frost could damage or kill unprotected plants, flowers, and late-season crops. Residents are urged to cover tender vegetation, bring potted plants indoors, and protect outdoor plumbing by draining or wrapping exposed lines.
Local emergency officials recommend checking irrigation systems and ensuring pets have warm shelter overnight. Conditions will quickly warm by midmorning as sunshine returns, with highs Tuesday afternoon climbing into the upper 50s. Another cool morning is likely Wednesday before temperatures rebound late week.
