Hanford, California – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for large portions of California’s central and southern Sierra Nevada, where heavy snowfall and strong winds are expected to create dangerous travel conditions through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, snow accumulations of up to 28 inches are forecast in higher elevations from early Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon. Wind gusts could reach 40 mph, producing blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility.
The advisory covers Yosemite National Park outside of the valley, Kings Canyon National Park, the Upper San Joaquin River region, and the Kaiser to Rodgers Ridge area. Affected locations include Shaver Lake, Huntington Lake, Florence Lake, Lake Thomas Edison, Lake Wishon, Cedar Grove, Devils Postpile, Tuolumne Meadows, and Wawona.
Forecasters warn that the combination of heavy snowfall and gusty winds could make travel very difficult to impossible, particularly on mountain roads, passes, and park routes. Whiteout conditions are possible at times, and road closures may occur if conditions deteriorate.
The advisory is scheduled to begin at 1 a.m. Saturday and remain in effect until 1 p.m. Sunday. Snowfall rates may be heaviest during overnight and early morning hours, when temperatures remain cold enough for efficient accumulation.
Officials urge anyone planning travel into the Sierra to reconsider or delay trips if possible. Those who must travel should carry winter survival supplies, check road conditions frequently, and allow extra time. California road conditions can be obtained by calling 5-1-1.
This advisory coincides with a busy winter recreation period, and visitors to Yosemite and Kings Canyon National Parks should be prepared for chain requirements, limited access, and potential park restrictions as the storm unfolds.
The National Weather Service will continue to monitor conditions, and additional advisories or warnings may be issued if snowfall totals or impacts increase.
