Whitney Portal, Calif. – Hikers and outdoor adventurers in the Eastern Sierra Slopes could face dangerous conditions beginning Saturday evening as a late-season winter storm drops snow and whips up gusty winds above 8,000 feet.
According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 5 p.m. Saturday through 11 p.m. Sunday for elevations above 8,000 feet. Between 2 and 4 inches of snow are expected at elevations from 8,000 to 9,000 feet, with up to 8 inches possible above 9,000 feet. Wind gusts may reach 40 mph, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of exposure.
Backcountry hikers near Whitney Portal, Aspendell, and the John Muir Wilderness are urged to postpone high-elevation treks. Snow levels will fluctuate between 7,500 and 8,500 feet, with temperatures dropping sharply overnight. Those camping or climbing should prepare for winter-like conditions with proper gear, extra layers, and a reliable communication plan.
Travelers along Whitney Portal Road and nearby mountain passes should monitor conditions and check road closures by calling 1-800-427-7623.
Warnings remain in effect through Sunday night, and additional advisories may follow if conditions worsen.
