Eureka, California – Heavy mountain snow and 60 mph wind gusts could make travel dangerous along Highway 3 over Scott Mountain beginning Saturday evening and lasting through Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Northern Trinity County above 4,500 feet. Snow accumulations between 6 and 12 inches are possible, with the heaviest totals expected at higher elevations. Strong winds could gust up to 60 mph along exposed ridges and mountain passes.

Chain controls and road closures are possible.

Drivers crossing Scott Mountain on Highway 3 should prepare for snow-covered pavement, reduced visibility and drifting snow, especially overnight Saturday into Sunday. Gusty winds may create blowing snow and hazardous crosswinds on elevated roadways.

What residents should do now: Monitor updated forecasts, check Caltrans QuickMap for chain requirements and avoid nonessential mountain travel during the height of the storm.

Snow and strong winds may persist into early Monday before tapering later in the morning. The Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Saturday evening through Monday morning.
