Sacramento, CA – A powerful winter storm is set to bring heavy snowfall and strong winds to Northern California starting Wednesday evening, with hazardous travel conditions expected through Friday.
According to the National Weather Service, areas above 2,000 feet in the Shasta Lake area and Western Colusa County could see between 2 and 8 inches of snow, while higher elevations above 3,500 feet may receive up to 2 feet. Winds could gust up to 45 mph, further reducing visibility and making travel difficult.
In the Sierra Nevada and Western Plumas County, snowfall is expected to be even heavier, with 2 to 4 feet possible above 6,000 feet and up to a foot between 4,500 and 6,000 feet. Wind gusts could reach 50 mph, creating whiteout conditions. The storm is expected to impact the Thursday morning and evening commutes, with chain controls and potential road closures likely.
Drivers are urged to check road conditions through Caltrans at quickmap.dot.ca.gov or by dialing 511 before traveling. Residents should prepare for winter weather by securing emergency supplies, staying updated on forecasts, and avoiding unnecessary travel during peak snowfall.
