Hanford, CA – A winter storm warning has been issued for the Sierra Nevada above 6,000 feet, with up to 10 inches of snow expected Tuesday. Higher elevations above 8,000 feet could see isolated totals of 16 inches, accompanied by wind gusts reaching 50 mph.
According to the National Weather Service, the warning is in effect from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday. Travel along routes such as CA-41 and CA-140 may become treacherous, with hazardous conditions likely during the morning and evening commutes. Road closures and significant delays are possible.
Residents and visitors are advised to avoid unnecessary travel. Those needing to travel should equip vehicles with chains and carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and flashlights.
The storm follows rain expected to arrive late Monday in the San Joaquin Valley. Snowfall will begin overnight in higher elevations as temperatures drop. Tuesday’s storm could also bring localized thunderstorms to the valley and sustained winds near 20 mph in the foothills.
The extended forecast for Hanford predicts clearing skies for Christmas Day, with highs near 54°F. However, hazardous travel conditions are expected to persist in mountain areas through Tuesday night.
Travelers should monitor conditions and check for road updates at 511 before heading out.
