Inyo County, CA – A powerful, long-duration winter storm is set to impact California’s Eastern Sierra and White Mountains beginning Tuesday afternoon, bringing extreme snowfall totals and dangerous travel conditions that could last through the end of the week.
According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 4 p.m. Tuesday through 4 p.m. Friday for the Eastern Sierra Slopes and the White Mountains of Inyo County, including areas such as Aspendell, Whitney Portal, Westgard Pass, and the Bristlecone Pine region.
Forecasters say snowfall could be historic at higher elevations. Areas above 9,000 feet along the Eastern Sierra may receive more than three feet of snow, while elevations above 8,000 feet could see one to two feet. Lower elevations around 6,000 feet may still receive 6 to 10 inches. In the White Mountains, totals could exceed two feet above 8,000 feet, with 8 to 16 inches above 7,000 feet.
Winds gusting up to 55 mph could lead to blowing snow, whiteout conditions, and possible tree damage. Snow levels are expected to start above 8,000 feet Tuesday and Wednesday, then drop to around 6,000 feet by Thursday and Friday, expanding impacts to more roadways.
Travel may become very difficult to impossible, particularly on Highway 168 through Westgard Pass, where conditions could deteriorate rapidly later in the week.
Drivers are strongly urged to avoid mountain travel if possible. Those who must travel should carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight. Road conditions can be checked by calling 1-800-427-7623 or visiting weather.gov/lasvegas.
