Sacramento, CA — A powerful winter storm is set to blanket California’s higher elevations with up to five feet of snow, prompting a Winter Storm Warning across the Sierra Nevada and Lassen Park regions beginning late Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Sacramento, the warning is in effect from 11 p.m. Sunday through 11 p.m. Tuesday for areas above 4,000 feet, including Chester, Blue Canyon, and Quincy. The most intense snowfall is expected Monday, with rates reaching 2 inches per hour, making travel nearly impossible and significantly impacting Monday’s morning and evening commutes.

Forecasters warn that total snow accumulations could range from 1 to 4 feet, with peak areas seeing up to 5 feet. Wind gusts may reach 55 mph, raising concerns over whiteout conditions and potential tree damage. Snow levels will drop to near 3,000 feet by early Tuesday, with light accumulations of up to 6 inches possible at lower elevations.

Officials urge residents and travelers to prepare for road closures and reduced visibility. Caltrans recommends checking road conditions at quickmap.dot.ca.gov or by calling 511 before traveling.

Motorists should carry emergency supplies and avoid mountain travel if possible during the storm window.
