Bakersfield, California – Strong winds are expected to whip through parts of Central California starting late Thursday, with gusts topping 55 mph in the Mojave Desert Slopes and surrounding areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, a Wind Advisory is in effect from 5 p.m. Thursday, May 22, through 11 p.m. Friday, May 23. West winds of 20 to 30 mph, with higher gusts near Indian Wells Canyon and Walker Pass, are likely. There’s a greater than 70% chance that wind gusts will exceed 55 mph in these areas.
Affected roads include California Highways 14, 58, and 178, along with U.S. Highway 395. Travel may become hazardous for high-profile vehicles, particularly near ridgelines and canyon passes. Loose objects should be secured, and residents are advised to limit outdoor activity during peak winds.
This weather is the result of a weak disturbance moving across Northern California, bringing turbulent conditions southward. While not unprecedented, these wind speeds can still lead to downed branches and limited visibility due to blowing dust.
Wind alerts remain in effect through Friday night, and additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
