Sierra Valley, CA – Four gray wolves were lethally removed from a pack in northern California this month after a surge of livestock attacks across the Sierra Valley, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW).

The agency, working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, confirmed the wolves were part of the Beyem Seyo pack. Officials say the decision followed months of non-lethal management efforts aimed at reducing livestock losses while balancing wolf conservation.

According to CDFW, between March 28 and Sept. 10, 2025, the pack was responsible for 70 livestock deaths. Those losses accounted for 63% of all confirmed or probable wolf-caused incidents statewide during that period.

From Sept. 10 to Oct. 14, 2025, an additional 17 livestock depredations were confirmed or considered probable. CDFW said the removals were conducted “in coordination with federal partners” and were based on the best available science regarding wolf behavior and livestock protection.

The agency continues to work with ranchers, local landowners, and federal wildlife specialists to investigate future incidents and reduce conflicts between wolves and livestock.
