Mono County, CA – A powerful early-season Sierra storm continues to dump heavy, wet snow across Mono County this morning, creating dangerous travel conditions in high mountain passes and backcountry terrain.

According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 4 p.m. PST for elevations above 9,000 feet, including areas near Mammoth Lakes, Lee Vining, Bridgeport, and Coleville. Forecasters report that heavy snow will persist through the afternoon, with strong winds along exposed ridges.

Meteorologists say accumulations of 9 to 12 inches are expected above 9,000 feet, with up to 4 inches possible just below that elevation. However, according to the NWS, snowfall near Mt. Lyell could exceed 2 feet, creating especially hazardous backcountry conditions. Winds along the highest peaks may gust up to 40 mph, reducing visibility during periods of heavier snowfall.

Travel could become very difficult to impossible, especially in steep terrain and unmaintained mountain roads. Those venturing toward high alpine areas—including hikers, skiers, and drivers using remote routes—should be prepared for rapid weather changes and deteriorating conditions.

Officials urge anyone traveling today to carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight, in case of delays or road closures. Road condition updates are available by dialing 511 in California.
