Los Angeles, CA – Boaters along the Southern California coast need to head to safe harbor immediately as severe thunderstorms push dangerous 50-knot wind gusts and possible waterspouts across the inner waters through 12:30 p.m. Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Oxnard, a Special Marine Warning remains in effect for the inner waters from Point Mugu to San Mateo Point, including Santa Catalina and Anacapa Islands. At 10:30 a.m., radar showed a line of severe storms stretching from 15 nautical miles north of the Santa Monica Pier to 11 nautical miles west of Point Vicente, moving north at 20 knots.
The strongest cells threaten King Harbor, Redondo Beach Pier, Manhattan Beach, Malibu, Los Angeles Harbor and the Port of Los Angeles. Catalina Island and Two Harbors also sit in the path of these storms.
Wind gusts above 50 knots can capsize small craft and damage larger vessels. Waterspouts may form rapidly, overturning boats and producing sudden, steep waves. Harbor entrances could become hazardous with little notice, especially near breakwalls and open channels.
Mariners should move to safe harbor now and remain there until storms clear. Officials urge boaters to report severe conditions to the Coast Guard or the National Weather Service. Additional marine advisories may follow if storms persist into the afternoon.
