Hanford, Calif. – A cold Pacific storm is expected to push into California later this week, bringing the first significant snowfall of the season to the Sierra Nevada. Forecasters warn up to 4 inches of snow could fall by early Saturday, with the highest totals likely in the Tioga Pass area.
According to the National Weather Service office in Hanford, chances for at least one inch of snow are strongest along higher elevations, where probabilities climb above 60%. Areas near Bishop, Shaver Lake, and Yosemite’s higher passes may see accumulations closer to 1–2 inches, while Tioga Pass could approach 4 inches.
Travelers are urged to prepare for slick mountain roads, chain controls, and possible temporary closures as early-season snow complicates conditions. Officials caution drivers to avoid unnecessary trips into higher passes after dark and to keep emergency kits stocked in vehicles.
The system marks an early taste of winter for Central California, with snowfall likely tapering off Saturday morning. Additional advisories may be issued if colder air deepens or if snow levels drop further into mid-elevation communities.
