Sacramento, CA – A fast-moving storm system is set to bring accumulating snow to the Sierra Nevada beginning late this afternoon, with forecasters warning of challenging travel conditions through Sunday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, a Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect from 4 p.m. Saturday until 10 p.m. Sunday for high-elevation areas across Yosemite National Park, Kings Canyon National Park, Sequoia National Park, and surrounding Sierra locations in central California. Snow totals could reach up to 11 inches above 7,000 feet, affecting communities and recreation areas such as Wawona, Grant Grove, Giant Forest, Lodgepole, Huntington Lake, Shaver Lake, and several backcountry regions.

Forecasters said snow is expected to begin late this afternoon and continue at varying intensities through Sunday evening. The highest accumulations will occur overnight into early Sunday when temperatures drop below freezing and precipitation bands strengthen.

According to NWS meteorologists, travel could become “very difficult” in mountain passes and park roads, where slick surfaces, reduced visibility, and sudden snow bursts may affect drivers. The agency urges anyone heading into the Sierra to slow down, allow extra travel time, and be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions. Chains may be required on higher-elevation roads depending on snow rates.

Visitors planning trips to Yosemite, Kings Canyon, or Sequoia National Parks this weekend should monitor park alerts and road status updates. For statewide road conditions, travelers can call 511 for the latest closures, delays, and chain requirements.

More widespread clearing is expected late Sunday night as the system exits eastward, though cold overnight temperatures will linger into early next week.
