Weaverville, California – A cold and calm night will bring the first frost of the season to interior northwest California, where temperatures are expected to dip near freezing by early Tuesday. The National Weather Service in Eureka has issued a Frost Advisory for Trinity County, including Weaverville, Trinity Center, Hayfork, Douglas City, and Carrville, in effect from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Tuesday.
According to forecasters, overnight lows will fall to around 33°F, allowing frost to form in sheltered valleys and low-lying areas under clear skies and light winds. The cold will pose a threat to sensitive outdoor vegetation and could end the growing season in parts of the northern interior.
The National Weather Service urges residents to cover or move tender plants indoors, and to protect outdoor plumbing and sprinkler systems that could be affected by freezing conditions. Pets and livestock should also have access to shelter as temperatures drop before dawn.
According to Trinity County emergency officials, conditions will warm quickly after sunrise, with highs Tuesday afternoon reaching the mid-60s under sunny skies. Another cool night is possible midweek before a weak Pacific system brings light rain to the far north coast later in the week.
