Reno, NV – A winter storm watch has been issued across northeastern California and the Lake Tahoe Basin from Sunday evening through Monday night, with hazardous conditions expected to severely impact travel.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, heavy snow is forecast above 5500 feet, with the Tahoe Basin potentially receiving 1 to 2 feet of accumulation above 7000 feet. Below that elevation, totals could reach 5 to 10 inches. Areas including Portola, Susanville, South Lake Tahoe, Truckee, and Markleeville are under alert.

Wind gusts up to 100 mph are expected along the Sierra ridge, while Lake Tahoe may see waves of 2 to 3 feet due to gusts near 40 mph. Conditions may become treacherous, especially during Monday morning and evening commutes.

Officials warn that travel could be very difficult or impossible, especially on mountain passes and along U.S. Highway 395. Chain controls are likely, and drivers should plan alternate routes or delay travel if possible.

Residents are urged to prepare for potential power outages, monitor local forecasts, and secure outdoor objects ahead of the storm’s arrival. Updates will continue throughout the weekend.
