Weaverville, California – Heavy mountain snow will spread across Trinity County starting Sunday morning, with up to 2.5 feet possible in higher elevations and dangerous travel expected through Wednesday afternoon.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 7 a.m. Sunday to 4 p.m. Wednesday. Snow will first impact elevations above 5,000 feet through Monday, then colder air will lower snow levels to around 2,000 feet Monday night into Tuesday.

Higher terrain above 3,000 feet could see between 1 and 2.5 feet of total accumulation by midweek. Areas above 2,000 feet may receive 6 to 10 inches. Winds may gust up to 35 mph, creating blowing snow and reduced visibility across exposed ridges and passes.

According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, snow levels will hover between 4,500 and 5,000 feet Sunday and Monday before dropping sharply Monday night. During the heaviest burst late Monday into Tuesday morning, snow levels could briefly dip to 1,500 feet, allowing accumulating snow in lower valleys including parts of Weaverville and Hayfork.

Major travel routes including Highway 299 over Buckhorn Summit and Oregon Mountain, Highway 3 over Scott Mountain and Hayfork Summit, and Highway 36 over South Fork Mountain are likely to see hazardous conditions. Tire chains may be required, and temporary closures are possible during peak snowfall.

Residents should delay non-essential travel, carry emergency supplies, and check road conditions by calling 511 before heading out. Prepare for possible power disruptions in higher elevations and protect pipes, pets, and livestock from freezing temperatures.
