El Centro, CA – Residents across Imperial Valley are being urged to limit outdoor activity as unhealthy levels of particle pollution sweep through the region.

According to the Imperial County Air Pollution Control District (APCD), an air quality alert remains in effect until 10 a.m. Sunday due to high concentrations of windblown dust. Impacted areas include El Centro, Brawley, Calexico, Ocotillo, and surrounding communities in Imperial County West and Southwest.

Officials warn that the fine particulate matter can penetrate deep into the lungs, potentially triggering asthma attacks, worsening heart and lung disease symptoms, and increasing the risk of respiratory infections. Sensitive groups — such as older adults, children, pregnant individuals, and those with preexisting health conditions — are especially at risk.

During periods of “Unhealthy” Air Quality Index (AQI) levels, residents are advised to avoid prolonged outdoor exertion. When indoors, keep windows and doors shut, and use air conditioners or purifiers if available.

The APCD also encourages reducing pollution by avoiding dirt roads, limiting vehicle trips, and minimizing activities like burning candles or grilling.
