California – Low clouds hang over city lights early, trapping moisture and haze close to the ground as winter officially begins. The air feels damp, streets stay darkened from lingering moisture, and visibility drops in pockets across the Los Angeles Basin.

According to the National Weather Service and South Coast Air Quality Management District, a mandatory wood-burning ban remains in effect today due to unhealthy air conditions. Calm winds and a strong marine layer allow pollution to build, especially across downtown Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley, and coastal communities. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity and avoid using fireplaces or wood stoves.

Temperatures stay mild for late December, with highs climbing into the upper 60s today and Monday. That warmth will not last. A Pacific storm system organizes offshore and pushes inland by Tuesday, bringing widespread rain and increasing travel impacts. Showers begin late Tuesday afternoon, then turn steadier by evening, with rainfall becoming heavy at times Tuesday night.

Urban flooding is possible in poor drainage areas, and slick roads could slow travel on major routes including I-5, I-10, and U.S. 101. Gusty winds may also develop near the coast and foothills. Recent burn scars remain vulnerable to runoff issues as rainfall intensifies.

By Wednesday, rain continues across much of Los Angeles County, with lingering showers likely into Christmas Day. While temperatures remain above freezing, cooler air arriving behind the system could lower snow levels well above city elevations, offering only a distant winter tease for Southern California.

Plan extra time for travel Tuesday and Wednesday, clear storm drains now, and keep rain gear ready. Conditions may change quickly as the storm arrives. Driving today or preparing for holiday travel? Share what you’re seeing where you live.
