California – Small hail is bouncing off sidewalks in Eureka this morning, and temperatures near 37 degrees are turning roads unexpectedly slick. Drivers are already reporting patchy icy spots, especially on bridges and overpasses along US-101 and Highway 255.
According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 4 p.m. today for coastal Del Norte and Northern Humboldt counties. Widespread small hail showers are creating icy accumulations and extremely slippery driving conditions. Snow levels may briefly dip to around 500 feet, allowing a rain-snow mix in higher neighborhoods.
Conditions can change quickly as showers rotate onshore. One moment it’s steady rain, the next it’s pea-sized hail covering pavement. That rapid coating can lead to sudden loss of traction. Slow down and allow extra space between vehicles, especially during heavier bursts late this morning.
Showers continue through tonight with a 100 percent chance of precipitation and lows near 37 degrees. Additional rainfall between a half and three-quarters of an inch is possible by early Thursday. Thursday remains wet with highs near 46 before tapering later in the day.
Friday brings a brief break with a high near 49 and only a slight chance of showers. More rain returns Friday night into Saturday, with breezy conditions and highs climbing into the low 50s.
Looking ahead, early next week stays showery but gradually milder, with highs reaching the mid-50s by Monday and Tuesday. Longer-range signals hint at above-normal temperatures late next week, offering early spring warmth after this active February stretch.
